DVD 3: New Gold For Old Glory: There have been several films about the 1980 USA O-lympic team, this is one not often seen.

Much more than a highlights film of the O-lympics series of games, which it has, this film details how the team came about and what it took to win the gold medal. The first bit of the film shows how the Russians, Finns, Swedes, Czechs, Canadians and Americans played a pre O-lympics tournament, two months before Lake Placid.

This was Herb Brooks' time to evaluate and mold the team in to an O-lympic championship team. After brief interviews with Herb Brooks, Rob McClanahan and Mike Ramsey, the film takes an in depth look at Brooks training program, as he looks for players that are willing to adapt to his system. Brooks is all miced up and you get to hear as he talks and yells at his players, the refs and so on.

This tournament must have been held in Minnesota as the games are played at the Northlands Coliseum and at least one of the games are played against the North Stars themselves. After a commercial for the Amateur Hockey Association its on to Lake Placid. There's a pretty good interview with Brooks on the ice, as well as with captain Mike Eruzione and the rest of the team, before the games commence. Brooks is interviewed throughout the film. There are highlights of the key game between USA and Sweden, which had to be at least tied, in order for the US team to advance. Herb Brooks pulls Jim Craig in the last minute of play, Baker ties the score and team USA moves on to play. USA stuns the world with a 7-3 romping of the Czechs, followed by wins against Norway, Romania and West Germany, which puts them in to medal round play.

Their first game was a fast and furious one against the Russians, who had won gold the previous 4 O-lympics. Everyone knows what happened that game. Captain Mike Eruzione scores half way through the 3rd period to break a 3-3 tie, which turns out to be the game winner (Do you believe in miracles?) as goalie Jim Craig put on a heroic effort to keep the desperate Russians from scoring in the last moments. After the excitement of that game Brooks commented ?I had to get the guys back down to earth for the gold medal game against the Finns. This was true, as a win would mean New Gold For Old Glory (name of the film), a loss, theyd get nothing. Silver and bronze were already decided. Of course they won the game and gold medals were presented at a very emotional ceremony.

The end of the film shows the whole team meeting Jimmy Carter.
--------------------------------------------------------------

The U.S. hockey team consisted of a bunch of college players. Nobody expected them to play with the powerful Soviets, who regularly beat NHL teams and had many of the best players in the world. In an exhibition game two weeks before the O-lympics, the Soviets won 10-3. In a semifinal game in Lake Placid, N.Y., the Soviets led 3-2 entering the final period. But Mark Johnson tied the game with 11 minutes left and two minutes later team captain Mike Eruzione scored for a 4-3 lead.

With the crowd wildly cheering them on, the U.S. holds on for the stunning upset. Goalie Jim Craig finishes with 36 saves and in the locker room, the U.S. players sing "God Bless America." Two days later, they beat Finland 4-2 to capture the gold medal.
