Girl’s and women’s hockey is one of the fastest growing sports in the world as more and more countries participate in the now Olympic sport and as more and more leagues are founded to take the sport to a level beyond the college campus and international competition.
Beginning in frigid Ottawa Canada in either 1889 or 1892, the offical starting date differs between the Canandian Hockey Association and Total Hockey, the official encyclopedia of the National Hockey League, women were playing competitive ice hockey, although at that time dressed in long woolen skirts, turtleneck sweaters, hats and gloves.
Through the 1920s and the 1930s, womens hockey held its own as a sport and continued to generate interest. Although War II and the 1950′s and 1960′s reduced interest in the sport to a mere curiosity, it gained significant recognition in 1980, when it became an intercollegiate sport in Canada. And, by 1992, college campuses throughout the United States accepted the sport and it became recognized as an official intercollegiate activity.
In 1990, eight countries competited for the Women’s Ice Hockey Championship and in 1998, the sport made its international debut in the Olympic games in Japan where it generated widespread interest..

The Stanley Cup has a very interesting history that dates back to 1888. Lord Stanley was appointed by Queen Victoria for Governor General of Canada on June 11, 1888. He and his family were pretty enthusiastic about ice hockey. He went to his first game on 1889 at Montreal’s Winter Carnival. It was from there where he showed his utmost respect for the skill and determination of the game. He and his family started to get more actively involved in Hockey to the point where they even formed leagues. What formed out of this was the Ontario Hockey Association eventually from son, Arthur, who was an avid hockey player. The Stanley Cup came about when the need for a trophy was on the horizon. Stanley suggested a sort of challenge cup that would be on the line every year for the winner of the championship game. The cup started out as a decorative punch bowl bought out of England from a silversmith named G. R. Collis. Eventually, the National Hockey League (NHL) was the official hockey league in the 1940′s to hold the cup. To this day, the NHL is still around and the Stanley Cup is still the trophy.

You may have spent years checking stats and watching games but are you familiar with the best hockey movies of all time? You can catch most of these rerunning on Direct satellite or even basic cable so you’ve really got no excuse to not have seen any of these classics…
Miracle: Chronicling the USA team’s pounding of the Russian National Team decades ago at the close of the Olympics, Miracle hit theaters in 2004. It’s got a great cast and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more inspirational message.
Slap Shot: A 1970s classic, Slap Shot has a lot of big name actors (think Paul Newman) and a lot of drama. You’ll get more backstory here than hockey but it’s worth it when the storylines are as riveting as these.
The Mighty Ducks: Who doesn’t love the Ducks? All the way from the early 90s this film spawned a mess of additional movies and made kids everywhere love hockey. It’s great for families to watch together and it’s even got Emilio Estevez! What’s not to like?

The first women’s hockey game to ever take place occurred in the year of 1892 in Barrie, Ontario. Since then, hockey has become a popular sport for women of all ages. In that first match in 1892, the hockey teams that played were called the Government House team and Rideau ladies team. The Government House team ultimately beat the Rideau ladies team in that first match.

Throughout the years, the uniforms women wear in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League have changed in a dramatic fashion. In the beginning years of the league, women would wear wool skirts, turtleneck sweaters, and gloves and hats.Get more information here. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/opinion/in-ottawa-at-least-were-pulling-for-the-canucks/article2030180/ Now, women’s uniforms closely match the types of uniforms that men wear in professional hockey leagues.

In 1993, the NCAA recognized the first women’s hockey game. Since then, Canada and the United States remain the dominant countries providing hockey leagues for women. In 2002, the rivalry between Canada and the United States at the Olympics drew millions of viewers around the world. Canada ultimately beat the United States in that historic game.

Canadian women’s hockey continues to be a popular sport amongst fans of all backgrounds. While it does not have the same fan base as men’s hockey, it is still popular in its own right.

Hockey players are a different breed; some say they’re crazy, others will say they are just plain weird. But by growing up playing hockey in Minnesota, I can tell you; it is not like any other sport. To most people it is not even a sport, but a religion. Since the day when Hobey Baker stepped foot onto the ice for the Princeton Tigers to Sidney Crosby’s game winning goal in overtime of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, hockey has evolved.

Arguably the best addition to the sport of hockey would be the indoor rink. Hockey teams didn’t always have the resources to walk into a heated and carpeted locker room then walk a tunnel onto a sheet of ice surrounded by 10,000 screaming fans. In the past they had to work with the resources they did have and usually that consisted of finding a pond thats big enough and sitting in the snow and tying on the skates. In 1862, Victoria Ice Arena was built and was the first indoor skating rink. Located in Montreal Canada, it hosted the first ever-organized indoor ice hockey game in 1875. From there, rinks started shooting up all over the place and hockey was looked at as a whole different game.

Like the game of hockey itself, the rink has evolved from a simple brick building to huge complexes that hold 5 sheets of ice. The hockey rink is no longer just a place of sport, there are rinks all over North America that have bars, restaurants and even a few have small indoor swimming pools. When the first rinks in the 1800s came around, there were no seats. Just concrete surrounding the ice and since then rinks have evolved have stadium seating surrounding the ice. Soon after the Victoria Ice Arena opened, they added boards and glass to rinks, especially the rinks that will be primarily used for professional and college hockey teams. Currently the largest hockey rink in the NHL is the Bell Centre in Montreal that seats just fewer than 21,300. All of the rinks used in the NHL seat over 16,000 people right now.

From the very first indoor game played in 1875 to the 2010 Stanley Cup finals held at the United Center, hockey has been moving forward. Making great strides in all aspects of the game, hockey is one of the most watched sporting events come playoff time. We must thank the great names in our sport of hockey that have impacted its evolution throughout the years. From Vezina to Esposito to Willie O’ree to Wayne Gretzky, all have made a positive impact on our game in their own ways.
